ASSIGNMENT 2 (QUESTION 2)

Stereotyping is exaggerated generalizations associated with a categorizing system, they go beyond the facts at hand and make claims that usually have no valid basic. However, it is also something that most people find difficult to avoid from doing. What do you think?

I am very agree with that statement. It is very difficult for us to avoid from being stereotype because it is normal for us as human being to judge people based on what we see without know the truth. Stereotyping occurs when we offer a hasty generalization about a group based on the judgement an individual from the group. We categorized other people into groups based on the variety of criteria such as sex, race, sexual orientation, occupation, region of the country, or physical abilities. Next, we infer that everyone within that group have the same characteristics.
For example, we might conclude that all lesbians are masculine, that people on the East Coast are fast-talking, or that older people are conservative. Sometimes it is not good to have stereotyping because we will judge people based on what we see, what we want to see and sometimes based on our past memories. Not all of stereotypes are negatives, there is also positive such as Asians and Indians are brilliant at math, engineering and science. Stereotypes can lead to prejudice which not good for us and cannot give any benefit at all. So it is important for us to have positive thinking as it can avoid from stereotypes and prejudice.
